Israelies accused of racism over marriage law

The Israeli parliament today passed a new law to force Palestinians who marry Israelis to live separate lives or move out of of the country. Human rights groups and Israeli Arabs described the law as racist. The law would prevent Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip who marry Israeli Arabs from obtaining residency permits in Israel. The vote was 53 in favour, 25 against and one abstention, a spokeswoman for the parliament said. “We see this law as the implementation of the transfer policy by the state of Israel,” said Jafar Savah from Mossawa, an advocacy centre for Israeli Arabs, referring to

Israeli marriage law upheld

Israel's high court upheld a law Sunday that sharply restricts the rights of Palestinians married to Israeli spouses to live inside Israel. The law was passed in 2002, at the height of the Palestinian uprising, for what the Israeli government said were security reasons. It states that only Palestinian women over the age of 25 and men over 35 are eligible to live inside Israel with Israeli spouses and eventually receive citizenship rights. Hundreds of Palestinians have been prevented from living with their families inside Israel as a result, The Washington Post reported. The law was challenged by civil-rights groups on

’Racist’ marriage law upheld by Israel.

Israel's High Court has narrowly upheld a law denying Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza married to Israeli citizens the right to live in the country with their spouses. The judges voted by six to five not to cancel a four-year-old amendment to the Citizenship Law which outlaws "family unification" in Israel between Palestinians and Arab citizens of Israel. It was passed as a one-year emergency measure in 2002 on the ground that it was needed to protect Israeli security. But the amendment, described yesterday by the Knesset member Ran Cohen, of the left-wing Meretz party, as "rooted in

China should enact a law to curb domestic violence so as to make families real cells of social stability, a member of National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) said Sunday. Wu Changzhen, the CPPCC member and an expert in marriage law, is in Beijing attending the Fifth Session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee, which opened Sunday afternoon. She is considering putting forward a proposal for such a law during the session. Wu said that curbing family violence calls for administrative rules and regulations, and laws on criminal offenses and civil affairs, so it is suitable

Domestic-assault case tests effects of ’04 marriage law.

Dec. 12--When Ohioans voted two years ago to outlaw same-sex marriages, they also might have stripped away defenses for unmarried partners in abusive relationships, domestic-violence attorneys will argue today in a case before the state Supreme Court. The state's 2004 Marriage Protection Act seems to limit domestic-violence laws to married couples, the attorneys say. "It would be a disaster for a large number of couples, both gay and straight," said Michael R. Smalz, attorney for domestic-violence groups that have filed friend-of-the-court briefs with the Supreme Court. "Certainly a large number...
