U. Richmond students concerned about Va. marriage law.


A new Virginia law prohibiting the recognition of same-sex civil unions has sparked controversy throughout the commonwealth, and members of the University of Richmond community are involved in the debate.

House Bill 751, an amendment to the Affirmation of Marriage Act for the Commonwealth of Virginia, was introduced by Delegate Robert G. Marshall (R-Prince William) and passed the House of Delegates, 79-18, and the Senate, 27-10, in April.

Gov. Mark Warner proposed amendments to the bill, but it passed by a veto-proof margin (two-thirds of both houses) and went into effect on July 1. Virginia already had a law against gay marriage.

But the new law also prohibits any “partnership contract or other arrangement between persons of the same sex purporting to bestow the privileges or obligations of marriage.” Partnership contracts and other arrangements between same-sex partners in another state are also void…

Restriction on university students’ marriage lifted

Ministry of Education issued the new Management Regulation for Students in General Universities and Colleges on Mar. 29. One change was the restriction on university students' marriage has been removed from the former regulation. Gay marriage rulings may affect ND housing

The University Office of Residence Life and Housing could face allowing same-sex marriage partners to reside in campus marriage housing residents if Massachusetts' ruling allowing same-sex marriages becomes a national trend.
