A baby born to a married Spanish lesbian through artificial insemination can be registered right away as having two mothers _ the biological one and her spouse, a judge said in a landmark ruling disclosed on Tuesday.

A Spanish judge has resigned his post in protest against the country's new law granting legal recognition to same-sex marriages. Antonio Alonso told the Spanish EFE news service that he had stepped down from his post as magistrate in the town of Pinto because "it is impossible for me, as a magistrate, to present an appeal for unconstitutionality against the law which allows these marriages." Spain’s Gay "Marriage” Law to Face Constitutional Challenge

The new Spanish legislation calling homosexual partnerings 'marriage' is to be subject to a legal challenge by a judge who refused to participate in such a 'wedding.' Judge Laura Alabau of the city of Denia in southwestern Spain refused to "marry" a lesbian couple and has filed a legal challenge against the reform of Spain's Civil Code allowing same-sex couples to contract "marriage." Judge Alabau is basing her argument on article 32 of the country's Constitution, which says, "Men and women have the right to contract marriage with full juridical equality." The constitution also allows judges to file constitutional challenges. The

MADRID, Spain - Spain's gay marriage law _ not yet a week old _ hit its first snag Wednesday as a court said a Spanish man could not wed his Indian partner because India does not allow same-sex marriage. The Supreme Court of Justice of Catalonia cited an article in the Spanish civil code which says foreign residents seeking to wed Spaniards are bound by the laws of the country where they have citizenship. An official of the ruling Socialist Party, which sponsored the law, said the party will now seek legislation to protect Spain's estimated 8,000 transsexuals. The gay marriage law, passed Thursday by the lower house of parliament, was published Saturday in the gazette, the Boletin Oficial del Estado, which records all government decisions in Spain. The document specified that the new law would go into effect Sunday. The law was signed by King Juan Carlos

Spanish Catholics must resist same-sex marriage law, cardinal says

The president of the Pontifical Council for the Family has said that people of faith have a duty to oppose a new Spanish law recognizing same-sex unions as legal marriages, and the government has an obligation to respect their rights to oppose the legislation. Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo told the Italian daily Corriere dela Sera that the new Spanish law is "inhuman and iniquitous," and leads to a "dehumanization" of the family. He added that the law contradicts a basic principle understood by "all men of all cultures and faiths, at all times, who thought of the family as
