Spain moves to approve same-sex marriage law

The Spanish Government has approved a draft Bill, which will legalise same-sex marriages and allow gay couples to adopt children. If the Bill is approved by the Parliament, Spain will become the third country in the European Union to legalise homosexual marriages. The Government estimates 10 per cent of the population is gay and opinion polls show the Bill has won strong public support. There has been criticism, however, from the conservative opposition party and the Roman Catholic Church.
