Spain Legalizes Gay Marriage; Law Is Among the Most Liberal

The Spanish Parliament voted Thursday to legalize gay marriage, giving final approval to a bill that would make Spain, a predominantly Catholic country, the first nation to eliminate all legal distinctions between same-sex and heterosexual unions, according to supporters of the measure.

The bill, passed 187 to 147, says couples will have the same rights, including the freedom to marry and to adopt children, regardless of gender.

Three other countries, the Netherlands, Belgium and Canada, have voted to legalize gay marriage. But only Canada’s laws, which do not yet apply to all of the country, contain language as liberal as Spain’s, according to advocates of the law.

The Spanish measure merely adds one sentence to existing law: ‘’Marriage will have the same requirements and results when the two people entering into the contract are of the same sex or of different sexes.'’

The Dutch and Belgian laws, by contrast, create separate rights for same-sex couples that do not fully match those of heterosexuals on issues like adoption, advocates say.

‘’Spain is talking about total equality,'’ said Kursad Kahramanoglu, co-secretary general of the International Lesbian and Gay Association, which is based in Brussels. ‘’Lots of people 15 or 20 years ago would have thought it would be impossible for Catholic Spain to get to this moment,'’ he said.

Spain unveils controversial gay marriage law

Madrid - A controversial law that would give gay and lesbian couples the same right to marry, divorce and adopt children as heterosexuals was approved by Spain's Socialist government on Friday. The draft legislation, which now goes to parliament, has sparked a furious reaction from the Roman Catholic church, which warned that it risks "introducing a virus into society". However, polls show the move enjoys firm support from the country's increasingly liberal population. The law will make traditionally Catholic Spain only the third country in the world to legalise gay marriage after the Netherlands and Belgium. Some other nations have provisions for recognising

Spain Same-Sex Marriage Law Delayed in Senate after Massive Catholic Rally

Spain's Senate has rejected on Wednesday a bill on same-sex marriage proposed by the liberal Socialist government. The upper house voted 131 to 119 to throw out the bill, according to BBC News. The massive rally against the legalisation of same-sex union through central Madrid sponsored by a Catholic pro-family group last Saturday is said to have influenced the decision of the Senate. Even though the latest move appears to be encouraging, local newspaper El Pais Spain suggested that the non-binding decision will not prevent the same-sex legislation being approved by the Parliament on 30th June. The Parliament has approved the

Spain: Group appeals gay marriage law

Foes of marriage equality in Spain are appealing the country's new law recognizing same-sex marriages. Angel Acebes, secretary general of the conservative Popular Party, said on Monday that his party will file an appeal with Spain's Constitutional Court, according to press reports. "The Popular Party has no doubts, and never has had any as we've made clear, as to the unconstitutionality of this law that the government has promoted," Acebes said. "We have instructed our legal services and lawyers to formulate an appeal." The Popular Party is the main parliamentary bloc in opposition to the ruling Socialist Party. On June 30 Spain became the

Spain sees first lesbian marriage

Veronica and Tiana, from Spain and Argentina, were married in Mollet del Valles near Barcelona. On Thursday, a judge in southern Spain angered the gay community by preventing two other women from tying the knot. The judge questioned whether the new marriage law was compatible with the constitution, which refers to marriage only between "a man and a woman." The first marriage between two men took place on 11 July a week after the marriage law came into force. Spain's lower house of parliament voted in favour of the bill on 30 June, overruling its rejection by the upper house,
