Marriage Law Roils Vermont Elections

Never before have Vermont’s autumn colors blazed so hot, some here are saying proudly these brilliant gilded days. Unfortunately, the same goes for Vermont’s politics, others are saying with concern.

From local races to the three-way contest for governor, this campaign season has a supercharged feel to many Vermonters, and not in a pleasant way.

‘’The state of Vermont has never been more polarized,'’ said Sean McKeon, a Republican candidate for the State Senate. ‘’This polarization is not like Vermont; it’s very unrecognizable sometimes.'’

Two words explain the heat: civil unions. Though other issues are also at play, many people are calling the coming election a referendum on the civil unions law that made Vermont the first state in the country to offer gay couples virtually all the legal rights and benefits of marriage.

Marriage Law Roils Vermont Elections

Dr. Dean is playing the classic incumbent's role, pointing to the achievements of his tenure: the best record on child health insurance in the country, moves toward universal health care coverage, hundreds of thousands of acres of open land preserved. But, he says, he has more to do, beginning with healing the rift caused by the civil-union law. Although he said he wanted to reconcile the two sides, he was not conciliatory about civil unions themselves. In the debate, he recalled a moment in college when he suddenly realized he was the only white in a room of African-Americans, and

A Gay-Rights Victory in Vermont

I am delighted that a state supreme court has, for the first time, ruled that same-sex couples should be given the same benefits and protections provided married couples (front page, Dec. 21). However, the Vermont Supreme Court left to the legislature the authority to decide if the state marriage law would be amended to include same-sex couples or if new legislation should be written. A domestic partner law would apply only to Vermont. A gay family traveling in any other state would have no protection. This would present problems even regarding who the next-of-kin is in emergency situations. Amending the

Gay Couples Challenge Massachusetts Marriage Law

Seven gay couples have filed a lawsuit with the state's highest court challenging the law that forbids gay marriage. "Each of these couples seeking access to the rights of marriage wants to do so to strengthen his or her own individual family and this government institution of marriage provides enormous protection for families," said Mary Bonauto, an attorney with the Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (search). "We just think it's time for reflexive discrimination to end." When Vermont became the first state to allow civil unions, granting gay couples many rights of marriage, people on both sides of the issue predicted

Canada delays proposed same-sex marriage law but says support still there.

Canada's attempt to legalize gay marriage likely will be delayed until after expected national elections because the government asked its top court Wednesday to decide whether traditional marriage met constitutional requirements. The top court already is considering the constitutionality of Ottawa's proposed legislation...

Portland, Ore., Courtroom Is Site of Same-Sex Marriage Debate.

By Ashbel S. Green, The Oregonian, Portland, Ore. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News Apr. 17--Supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage squared off in a Portland courtroom Friday over the constitutionality of Oregon's marriage laws, debating everything from the intent of the state's founding fathers to studies examining the effect on children raised by gay and lesbian parents. A lawyer for the state, meanwhile, focused on what will happen if the court strikes down the state's marriage law, arguing that the Oregon Legislature should get the opportunity to pass a compromise civil union law as Vermont lawmakers did under similar circumstances.
