Europe Protesters march against French marriage law

Around one-hundred thousand people have demonstrated in Paris against draft legislation that would give unmarried couples similar status to married people.

The turnout was half what the organisers had predicted.

Opponents of the bill, including religious groups and many right-wing politicians, say it would undermine family values by recognising homosexual relationships.

But the French Interior Minister, Jean-Pierre Chevènement, has dismissed the demonstrators’ call to withdraw the bill.

The lower house of the French parliament has approved the draft law.

But the BBC Paris correspondent says it still has many hurdles to clear.

World: Europe French church condemns new marriage law

The French Roman Catholic Church has condemned the government's decision to introduce a law to grant unamrried couples living together the same rights enjoyed by married couples. A statement by the French Bishops Council said the law would open the way for homosexual marriages. The Justice Minister Elisabeth Guigo said the bill known as the civil solidarity pact was needed to give legal protection to couples who cannot or do not want to get married. Correspondents point out that there are around two unmarried million couples -- gay and heterosexual -- who are regarded as singles under current law. The

Europe French ’gay marriage’ law rejected

A controversial draft bill in France intended to give legal recognition to homosexual couples has been thrown out of parliament on a procedural motion. The right-wing opposition won a vote to declare the draft legislation inadmissible because there were not enough government supporters present. The legislation can be put to parliament again but not in the immediate future. The new law was intended to establish a formal contract of union for homosexual couples giving them the right to a number of financial advantages, such as tax relief on inheritance. Prime Minister Lionel Jospin said the legislation was intended to reflect

French ’gay marriage’ law passed

The French Parliament has approved a controversial bill that gives gay couples many of the rights enjoyed by married people. The National Assembly passed the Civil Solidarity Pact (PACS) by 315 votes to 249. Conservative opponents immediately said they would ask the Constitutional Council to rule whether the law was unconstitutional. The PACS allows unmarried couples to register their union and enjoy some of the tax, legal and social welfare benefits associated with marriage. It is intended to allow gay and heterosexual couples who are not married to "organise their common life". Partners who want to separate will be able

Spain, Poland Protest Gay Marriage

Flanked by church clerics, hundreds of thousands of Spaniards marched through the streets of Madrid Saturday to protest against a proposal by the socialist government to put gay marriage on an equal footing with heterosexual unions – something only Belgium and the Netherlands have managed to achieve. Organizers, who insisted the march was pro-family and not anti-gay, said some 1.5 to 2 million protestors had turned out to show their stance on the historical legislation. According to government counts, there were only 166,000 participants. The march was the third in just as many weeks. Lead by 20 Catholic bishops, including

Gay unions common in the Netherlands

While the United States is engaged in debate on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, Canadians are discussing a federal law to legalize it and many European countries are adopting civil unions for gay couples. (Gay couples march on Manhattan) But in the Netherlands, nobody talks about the issue anymore. "It's really become less of something that you need to explain," says Anne-Marie Thus, who in 2001 married Helene Faasen. "We're totally ordinary. We take our children to preschool every day. People know they don't have to be afraid of us." Around the world, countries are coming to terms with
