EU backs gay man’s pension rights

Tadao Maruko’s partner died in 2005 but the pension fund refused him a widower’s pension and the case was sent to the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

The court ruled that refusing a pension was direct discrimination if the partnership was comparable to marriage.

Mr Maruko’s lawyers predict the case will have repercussions in EU countries where same-sex partnerships are legal.

“I’m happy. It’s a very important step,” lawyer Helmut Graupner told the BBC News website.

“This will help all those countries which have registered partnerships. It’s the first time the ECJ has ruled in favour of same-sex couples.”

The Pension Concubines

Living in sin is bad enough without the government's encouraging it, protested the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vienna, and if the Church had to break the law to stop it—the Church would just have to break the law. Ever since the war, thousands of Austrian couples have been living together without benefit of holy wedlock. Pensions, not passions, are to blame. Widows of public servants and war widows get a pension ranging from $24 for the wife of a streetcar driver to $80 for the wife of a field marshal—but the money stops if the woman marries again. The result has

World: Europe French church condemns new marriage law

The French Roman Catholic Church has condemned the government's decision to introduce a law to grant unamrried couples living together the same rights enjoyed by married couples. A statement by the French Bishops Council said the law would open the way for homosexual marriages. The Justice Minister Elisabeth Guigo said the bill known as the civil solidarity pact was needed to give legal protection to couples who cannot or do not want to get married. Correspondents point out that there are around two unmarried million couples -- gay and heterosexual -- who are regarded as singles under current law. The

Cheryl Jacques, BC '84, president and executive director of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest GLBT organization in the country, returned to her alma mater to talk to students about her work with the organization and the state of gay issues in the country. GLBT Issues, Boston College Alumni Association, and the Women's Resource Center sponsored the event. Jacques is a former Massachusetts State Senator and spoke at the Democratic National Convention this year. During Jacques' time in the state senate, she argued successfully for the inclusion of sexual orientation in Massachusetts's Hate Crimes Statute and established standby guardians

California backs gay marriage law

The 41-35 vote in favour by the Assembly follows a similar ruling by the state Senate last week. It comes after bitter debate over gay marriage. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger must now decide whether to make the bill law. The US' first legal gay marriage took place last year, after a Massachusetts court ruled gay couples had the right to marry under its state constitution. The bill approved by the California Assembly states that marriage is a civil contract between two people, rather than between a man and a woman. Values 'betrayed' Its supporters have compared it to previous civil rights

Pa. Senate backs gay-marriage ban.

The state Senate yesterday approved a constitutional amendment reaffirming the state's definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman, but left intact existing legal recognitions of domestic partnerships between gay couples and unmarried heterosexual couples. With yesterday's 38-12 vote, the amendment will now be returned to the House, where members only several weeks ago had passed a more restrictive version of the same-sex marriage ban. Steve Miskin, spokesman for House Majority Leader Sam Smith (R., Jefferson) said he was uncertain whether the chamber would consider the Senate version before the summer recess began June 30.
