Keeping regular session special
Gov. Mike Beebe has rattled off a laundry list of reasons he’s against calling a special session to fix Arkansas’ garbled new marriage law — but none of those reasons make a lot of sense. At least, they don’t make enough sense. One has to wonder: Is there something more behind Beebe’s reluctance to convene the Legislature and address the marriage law’s inadequacies? The governor left open the possibility of calling a special session or asking Benton County officials to appeal a judge's ruling Wednesday that an independent commission overstepped its bounds when it tried to correct the law. "If we see there is someone trying to take advantage of the law in a way that appears to be offensive, and creates a crisis, then we wouldn't hesitate to call a special session. We're not there yet,"

They and about 100 others members of Butterfield Assembly of God in Van Buren are leaving for North Little Rock at 2 p.m. to give them plenty of time to make the big covenant marriage event at Alltel Arena at 7 p.m. They hope to get back to the church about midnight. "We believe it's the right thing to do,"Shasta Parker, who, along with her husband, has led the covenant marriage movement in their church. "It's making a stand for what we believe marriage should be and to support our
