Gov. Mike Beebe has rattled off a laundry list of reasons he’s against calling a special session to fix Arkansas’ garbled new marriage law — but none of those reasons make a lot of sense. At least, they don’t make enough sense. One has to wonder: Is there something more behind Beebe’s reluctance to convene the Legislature and address the marriage law’s inadequacies? It’s a safe bet that at least some of Beebe’s special session angst stems from fear of tarnishing the image of the 2007 regular session, which was hailed by many around the state as a lawmaking triumph.

(Little Rock, Arkansas) Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe has signed legislation erasing an error that allowed anyone except gay couples to marry - even toddlers - as long as they had parental permission. The original law was intended to establish 18 as the minimum age to marry but also allow pregnant teenagers to marry with parental consent. An extraneous "not" in the bill, however, allowed anyone who is not pregnant to marry at any age if the parents allow it. Gov. Mike Beebe said Thursday that a flawed law that could let even toddlers marry doesn't yet require a special session of the Arkansas Legislature to fix. The governor left open the possibility of calling a special session or asking Benton County officials to appeal a judge's ruling Wednesday that an independent commission overstepped its bounds when it tried to correct the law.
