Masschusetts activists continue to debate gay marriage.

The concept of gay marriage has ignited intense debates across the country. As the first and only state to legally allow homosexual couples to marry, Massachusetts has made its controversial mark on history. Yet, gay rights were brought to the forefront in Massachusetts over the past several months following two landmark cases. In March, Gov. Mitt Romney said he planned to propose a bill that would grant the Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Boston's adoption services a religious exemption that would allow them to discriminate against gay couples. He has repeatedly pushed for such commitments to high-tech jobs through his Third Frontier Project, which seeks to promote advances in the fields of biotechnology and fuel cell research and new medical equipment. The Third Frontier Project is also part of an effort to combat Ohio's purported "brain

Companies refuse benefits to same-sex spouses

Some Mass. employers with federally regulated health plans have decided not to extend health benefits to spouses of gay workers, saying the plans are not bound by the state's same-sex marriage law. General Dynamics Corp., FedEx Corp. and Caritas Christi Health Care are among the employers that do not provide married gay workers in Massachusetts with the same health benefits available to heterosexual married couples. "In determining the definition of dependent spouse, General Dynamics applies the spouse definition from the federal Defense of Marriage Act," the Virginia-based defense contractor, which has 3,000 workers in Massachusetts, said in a statement to
